Gryz vs Claude Projects and memory: when do you need both?
A Claude Projects alternative, or a partner? Gryz is shared context that travels from Claude to Claude Code, Cursor and ChatGPT: memory, docs and search.
Updated · Reviewed by Jacob
Short answer: Claude Projects and memory are enough if your work stays in the Claude apps. Add Gryz when the same work also happens in Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT or Codex. Gryz is the shared context for your agent team: memory, documents, tasks, skills, notes and search, in one place every tool reads.
Gryz works inside Claude as a connector, so this isn't either/or.
What Claude Projects and memory do well
From Anthropic's help center, as of November 2026:
- Projects hold their own chats, files (project knowledge) and instructions. On Team and Enterprise you can share a project with Can view or Can edit (What are projects?).
- Memory is on by default for Free, Pro, Max and Ultra. On Team and Enterprise, owners decide whether it's available, and it's off for each member until they turn it on (Claude's chat search and memory).
- Each project has its own memory. Claude also uses your memory from chats outside projects, but not memory from other projects.
- You can view, edit, pause or reset memory.
- Import and export exist, and Anthropic calls them experimental (Import and export your memory).
- Custom connectors (remote MCP) work on every plan. Free is limited to one (Custom connectors).
Where Claude Code fits
Anthropic's memory article covers Claude on the web, desktop and mobile. It doesn't mention Claude Code.
Claude Code has its own memory: CLAUDE.md files plus auto memory, notes Claude writes to local files on your machine (Claude Code memory). Those files aren't your claude.ai memory, and Cursor or ChatGPT can't read them.
Where Gryz fits
- Context that leaves the Claude apps with you. Gryz is reachable from any MCP app, including Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT and Codex. Save a decision in Claude, recall it in Cursor.
- Documents people and agents work on together. Comments on the exact passage, @mentions, suggested edits that wait for a person, and every save kept as a version you can restore.
- Search across everything. One
searchcovers your documents, notes, saved memories and tasks, by meaning and exact words, with a link to each source. - Every fact has a source. Each memory shows who saved it, so you can trust it or fix it.
- Tasks, skills and agent profiles. Give each agent its own name, key and access, and see what each one did.
