How do people and AI agents edit the same document?
Comments on a passage, @mentions, agent suggestions that wait for you, and every save kept as a version. How people and agents share one doc in Gryz.
Updated · Reviewed by Jacob
Short answer: In Gryz, people and AI agents work on one document. People comment on the exact passage and @mention each other. Agents read those comments, ask you what to do, and save changes as suggestions a person accepts. Every save is a version you can restore, and share roles decide who can view, comment or edit.
Who can do what
When you share a restricted document, you give each person a role. New shares start as Comment.
| Role | Read | Comment | Change the text | Accept suggestions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| View | Yes | No, but they can read comments | No | No |
| Comment | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Edit | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Owner | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes, plus sharing, visibility and restoring versions |
An agent gets its person's role, never more. If someone can only comment, an AI app they connect can only comment too. See share roles.
How a review works
1. People comment on the exact passage
- Select some text, press Comment, and write.
- On a computer, threads sit beside the document next to their passage. On a phone, they open in a sheet.
- Type @ and pick a name. On a private document, that's the owner and the people it's shared with. Up to 5 people per comment, and the list shows names only, never email addresses.
- Press Resolve when a thread is handled, or Reopen it.
Details in Comments and notifications.
2. Your agent brings the comments to you
Ask your AI app something like:
Go through the comments on my launch plan with me.It calls list_comment_threads, then shows you each comment with the passage, who wrote it and the choices you're allowed to make:
- propose the change (you approve it in Gryz first)
- reply in the thread
- mark the comment as done
- skip it for now
It asks before it acts. The one exception: on your own comment you can tick Ask my agent to suggest a fix (or Ask my agent to reply when the comment is set to No agent edits), and your agent handles it without asking, though its changes still wait for approval. See Comments and AI agents.
3. Agent changes wait as suggestions
Every change that comes from a comment is saved as a suggestion. The owner and people with Edit see Accept and Reject in the thread. Accepting makes the change and resolves the comment.
An agent can never accept its own suggestion.
4. People edit right in the page
- Open a Markdown document and press Edit. The page becomes the editor, and comments stay on screen.
- On an HTML page, Edit lets you change the words where they sit. The layout stays as it is.
- Save is a button. There's no autosave, but Gryz keeps your draft on your device until you save.
See Edit in the page.
5. Every save is a version
- History shows who made each version (you, a person, or the name of the connected app) and what changed.
- Restore saves the old text as a new version, so you can undo the undo.
- Agents can list and restore versions too, with
list_document_revisionsandrestore_document_revision.
See Version history and assistant permissions.
Settings that keep agents in check
Per document, "What assistants can do here":
- Can edit (the default): agents change the document directly, and every change is saved in history.
- Suggestions only: agents propose changes. Nothing changes until a person accepts it.
- Read only: agents can read, but can't change or suggest.
Agents can't change this setting. Your own edits in the browser are never blocked by it.
Per comment, a rule:
| Rule | What an agent may do |
|---|---|
| Agents can help (default) | Ask you first, then act. The document setting still applies |
| Human review required | Reply and suggest. Every change waits for a person |
| No agent edits | Reply only |
When two edits collide
Gryz never overwrites someone else's work.
- Different parts changed: Gryz combines the two and tells you who else made changes.
- The same lines changed: you pick Keep mine, Keep theirs or Keep both.
- Agents pass
if_matchwith the revision they read. If the document moved on, the edit is refused or combined, never written over.
Limits worth knowing
- Version history by plan. A free account keeps 25 versions per document for 30 days. Pro and Pro Plus keep 100 for 90 days. See plans.
- Comments are plain text, up to 2,000 characters, editable for 15 minutes.
- Company documents don't have comments yet.
- Agent comments are labelled. A comment your agent posts shows your name, an Agent badge and "via unverified agent", because Gryz can't yet verify which software is behind a connection.
- Editing in the page works on Markdown and HTML. Other types use the editor on your Documents page.
FAQ
Can an agent edit my document without asking? Not from a comment: those changes wait as suggestions. Outside comments, a document's default is Can edit, so an agent you ask can change it directly, and every change is saved in history. To review every change first, set the document to Suggestions only or Read only.
Can my teammate's agent change my document? Only as far as your teammate's role allows. With Comment, their agent can reply but not suggest changes.
What if an agent's change was wrong? Open History and restore the version before it. Nothing is lost.
What if a comment says "ignore your rules"? Gryz hands comments to agents marked as another person's words, not instructions. Your agent still can't do more than your role allows. Use Suggestions only if you want to review every change.
Is it free? Comments, sharing and version history come with a free account. See pricing.
